Greyson’s new album “Hold on ‘til the Night” has been a constant presence on the Billboard “Under 21” music charts, and speculation is that "Gold" certification is only a month or two away.
So could he actually get a Grammy Nomination?
Yes.
The eligibility requirements for the 2012 54th Annual Grammy Awards say an album must be released between Oct. 1, 2010 and Sept. 30, 2011, and must be in general distribution in the United States.
That means that “Hold on ‘til the Night” and ALL individual tracks should be eligible for an award.
Even when there is a timing problem with the actual album release date, the rules state that all that is necessary is a SINGLE TRACK be released into the general market – and that includes iTunes, Amazon, and other electronic distribution.
That means there is no problem for Greyson meeting the eligibility requirements and now it is all up to the judges.
There have been some major changes to the Grammy rules for 2012 and several categories have been combined into one. This won’t affect Greyson’s chances (Get it? Greyson's Chances) because the categories were mainly in the crossover and hip hop categories.
Greyson could be nominated for his entire Album (Best New Album), or for an individual track (Best New song). He could also be nominated as an artist in the Best New Artist category or for Best Video for “Unfriend You”.
Much of the nominating process is political. That means that producers, engineers, and record labels have a lot to do with who gets nominated and who wins an award.
The bottom line is if the industry WANTS Greyson to get a nomination then he will GET one.
Regardless, we hear that he will at least be making an appearance as a guest, and may even get the opportunity to present an award or perform a song live.
There are 78 categories this year and you can see all of them plus the revised rules at the Grammy site here.
We like the idea of Greyson winning Best New Artist but think there is a lot of competition and would be just as happy if one of his songs took home an award.
Album sales won’t matter for his chances to win as the Grammy Committee does not consider sales volume or certification.
The Grammys are the only peer-presented award to honor artistic achievement, technical proficiency and overall excellence in the recording industry, WITHOUT regard to album sales or chart position.
Details are already leaking out about the 2012 show - like Shakira is going to be honored as the 2012 Latin recording person of the year, and that Paul McCartney will be awarded the charity award of MusiCare Person of the year.
Next year’s Grammy Awards ceremony will take place February 12th at The Staples Center in Los Angeles California.
There will be some big stars trying to win the coveted award including Adele, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Kanye West, Sugarland, Lady Antebellum, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, Pitbull, and Rihanna – we just hope our little Greyson gets a lucky break!
We think he might because earlier this year Greyson took part in the teen Grammy Camp for charity after THEY approached HIM to lend a hand.
This video shows that Greyson is already a familiar name to the organization and since he helped them out at the 2011 Grammy Camp then maybe they will help him by giving him a nomination or two.
Also, with Ellen DeGeneres backing him there should be enough political clout to push the nominating process through.
Good luck, and we wish you the best Greyson!
